In addition to rice, any other leftovers remaining such as tomatoes, onions, snails, beans, chicken or rabbit were added to the dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned how to make Paella from a Spanish business associate. In December 1998, California had a freeze which damaged the entire citrus crop.&nbsp; I was working for an export company and citrus was one of the primary crops we sold to our retail customers in Hong Kong.&nbsp;Since the California crop was frozen, we had to look for an alternative citrus source to supply them for the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday.&nbsp;We quickly learned that Spain produces citrus and within a few weeks we were exporting Spanish navels to Hong Kong.&nbsp; At the end of the season, our citrus supplier visited us in the U.S. and brought me a paella pan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Paella has become one of my favorite dishes to make when I entertain friends and family. It is an engaging meal from start to finish.&nbsp;I usually cook this on my grill allowing our guests to watch the entire process.&nbsp;The smell of the garlic, chicken, Spanish chorizo and saffron will make anyone\u2019s mouth water and before long, everyone is congregating near the grill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"559\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/designkyn.com\/growers-table\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/paella-use-e1589652031382.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1371\" style=\"width:397px;height:auto\" title=\"Paella Valenciana\" srcset=\"https:\/\/designkyn.com\/growers-table\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/paella-use-e1589652031382.jpg 559w, https:\/\/designkyn.com\/growers-table\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/paella-use-e1589652031382-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/designkyn.com\/growers-table\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/paella-use-e1589652031382-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I belong to group of food enthusiasts in Dallas called Diverse Food Cooking and Exploration.&nbsp;We will often get together to try new cuisines at various restaurants or have member hosted cooking classes. I volunteered to host a Paella cooking class at my home.&nbsp;This was the first time any of them had eaten paella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I set the table with a citrus theme since paella originated in Valencia Spain. Paella takes about one hour to cook from start to finish. I do not use rabbit, instead I substitute boneless chicken thighs and\/or legs. The flan was a little trickier to prepare but if you are an adventurous cook, here is the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/debbienet.com\/authentic-spanish-flan\/\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;recipe.<\/a>&nbsp; It was delicious!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips I have for making Paella:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t be intimidated by the directions.\u00a0This is an easy dish to make especially if you know how to make a rice pilaf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read through the recipe directions first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YES, a paella pan IS necessary.\u00a0This specially designed pan cooks the rice evenly. You can buy one at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishtable.com\/category\/paelleras.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spanish Table<\/a>\u00a0or on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=paella+pans&amp;ref=nb_sb_noss_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YES, you need to buy Spanish rice.\u00a0I usually buy Bomba rice and it can be bought online at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=paellsa+rice&amp;ref=nb_sb_noss_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0or at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishtable.com\/category\/arroz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spanish Table.<\/a>\u00a0Sometimes World Market carries it as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saffron and Smoked Paprika are a must!\u00a0I buy both online at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Zaran-Saffron-Superior-Threads-Premium\/dp\/B079BQQVY7\/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&amp;keywords=safron&amp;qid=1586271070&amp;sr=8-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare and measure out your ingredients so everything is ready once you start to cook this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on the size of your pan, it will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour over medium heat on the grill.\u00a0DON\u2019T RUSH IT.\u00a0 This is a good time to enjoy a couple of sangrias while you are cooking it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I add the seafood during the last 15 minutes of cooking. This is usually when almost all the liquid is absorbed by the rice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here is the final secret to success \u2026\u2026.as soon as all the liquid is absorbed turn off the heat.\u00a0 Securely cover the pan with aluminum foil\u00a0<strong>\u2013 watch out the pan is very hot so be sure to use an oven mitt!\u00a0<\/strong>Let it rest for 20 minutes. If you try to eat the paella before doing this the rice will be hard as it is not finished.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Learn from my mistake here.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>** I do not get paid from any retailers I mention in an article or on my blog. I share them because they are my personal favorites. **<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--WPRM Recipe 1385-->\n<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe\">\n\t<h2 class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-name\">Paella Valenciana<\/h2>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-image\" src=\"https:\/\/designkyn.com\/growers-table\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/paella-clip-300x225-1-150x150.jpg\"\/>\t<p class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-summary\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-equipment\">\n\t\t<ul><li>Paella Pan<\/li><\/ul>\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-ingredients\">\n\t\t<ul><li>\u00bd cup uncooked Valencian Rice per person or 1\/3 cup if using Bomba<\/li><li>1 cup chicken stock per person<\/li><li>5 threads saffron per person dissolved in a little white wine<\/li><li>4 tbsp or more, olive oil, to cover bottom of pan<\/li><li>1 piece\u00a0of chicken\u00a0such as a thigh, per person<\/li><li>\u00bd to 1\u00a0soft chorizo\u00a0such as Bilbao or Palacios, per person<\/li><li>\u00bd tsp Spanish sweet pimenton\u00a0paprika per person<\/li><li>1 clove\u00a0garlic per person\u00a0minced<\/li><li>\u00bc cup chopped onion per person<\/li><li>\u215b cup grated tomato\u00a0cut in half, grate and discard the skin per person<\/li><li>2 shrimp or prawns per person<\/li><li>2-4 small clams and\/or mussels per person<\/li><li>red piquillo peppers cut in strips<\/li><li>artichoke hearts\u00a0green beans or peas<\/li><li>cooked white Spanish beans such as alubias de la granja or judion<\/li><li>lemon wedges for garnish<\/li><li>salt to taste<\/li><\/ul>\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-instructions\">\n\t\t<ol><li><p>Heat stock in a separate stock pot. Crush saffron and add it to stock or a little bit of white wine.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Heat paella pan over medium heat, add olive oil and fry chicken until it begins to brown.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Next add garlic and onions and saute until translucent. Add chorizo and cook until heated.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Add the rice, stirring until well coated with oil. Add the paprika and grated tomato. Stir while cooking for a few minutes. Add saffron flavored wine and hot stock. Bring to a boil while scraping the bottom of pan. Now the rice should be level and you will not need to stir from this point on.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Adjust heat to maintain a nice simmer.<\/p><\/li><li><p>When the rice has absorbed a good amount of liquid but still has a soupy appearance add the mussels or clams.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Once the rice is cooked add the shrimp or prawns tucking them down into the rice, then the piquillo peppers, artichoke hearts, green beans, beans and peas.<\/p><\/li><li><p>During this time the rice should be caramelizing on the bottom of the pan or creating what is called the socarrat. It will make a faint crackling sound and smell toasty sweet but not burnt.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Set aside to rest for 20-25 minutes.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Sprinkle with chopped parsley, garnish with lemon wedges and serve.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-notes\">\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-meta\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-meta-course\">Main Course<\/div><div class=\"wprm-fallback-recipe-meta-cuisine\">Mediterranean<\/div>\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!--End WPRM Recipe-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paella was originally considered a peasant\u2019s dish, cooked by farmers or laborers over a wood fire fueled by orange and pine branches.
